about
In this project I developed and implemented for the third year graphic design students at East Carolina University, students are sent out into their local community in search of instances of vernacular typography. This means single use, single instance typography, lettering, and sinage. Once students have gathered their samples. They choose one from which to digitize letterforms and design new letterforms not represented in the sample. In the final stage of the project, students experiment with an alternative material to create a new composition, translated from their original vernacular type sample.
